reminder of ancient mountains,

The Wesern Cascades are remnants of mountains formed nearly 40,000,000 years ago. Not the High Cascades, which is how we distinguish the younger snow covered mountain range, lying to the east of the Western Cascades. The Western Cascades in Oregon are more easily distinguished from their younger counterparts than is the case in Washington. Remnants we see today are usually volcanic plugs or necks marking former vents. Elevator Rock is just such a one.

Even before I knew this, or knew the name of the rock, it was one of my favorite places to stop along the river when driving the pass.
