The Big Obsidian Flow is the youngest lava flow in Oregon - 1300 years. The interpretive hiking trail, only a mile long, takes one up and onto this lava flow of obsidian and basalt. Being an interpretative trail, one expects to find signed information, and that is the case here as well. Find seven interpretive signs which discuss the geology, biology, history, and archaeology of the Big Obsidian Flow. In addition, the interpretative hiking trail of the Big Obsidian Flow offers spectacular views of the caldera: Paulina Lake, forests, forests, forests, and mountains to the west in the Cascades.

Directions: From Bend, travel 24 miles south on Hwy 97, then 15 miles east on County Road 21. You'll find Little Crater Campground on Paulina Lake nearby as well.
