Explore the charm and elegance of the Quartzville Creek Backcountry Byway. Wander a forest path beside Green Peter Reservoir. Stop and take a swim. Meander alongside the blue-green depths of Quarzville Creek, a wild and scenic river, carving a corridor amidst towering old growth forests - some trees are over 450 years old, and more than 200 feet tall. Enjoy wildflowers in spring and glistening reds and golds in autumn. No matter the season the byway is marked in drama and subtlety. Give yourself at least 1 to 2 hours for the journey. Perhaps more. The byway is 50 miles long, and there is much to delight, conversations to be had with other travelers - at Yellowbottom Campground, I met a man who knew my parents. Perhaps you'd like to pan for gold or fish, maybe kayak. Stop and sleep under the protection of a rocky outcropping. Pick a few sweet summer berries from the huckleberry patches dotting the roadway.

Directions to the Quartzville Creek Backcountry Byway: Travel east on Oregon Hwy 20, the Over the River and through the Woods Scenic Byway. You'll see the signs for Foster Lake in Sweet Home telling you to drive east. Follow them. When you see the sign for Green Peter Dam prepare to turn left to cross the river. As soon as you have crossed the river, turn right, and you'll be on the Quartzville Creek Backcountry Byway, 11. Follow the creek until the road leaves the creek behind, and you'll be in the Willamette National Forest. Keep going. Don't give up. The road is good. If you don't turn around, you'll see mountains, mountains, mountains, and the road comes out on Oregon Hwy 22, the Santiam Pass, south of Marion Forks. Turn left, follow the north Santiam River, if you want to go back to Salem. Turn right if you want to reconnect with Oregon Hwy 20, the Over the River and through the Woods Scenic Byway, which follows the gentle meander of the south Santiam. From Hwy 20, you can access a multitude of hiking trails that wander through old growth forests, fields of wildflowers, and the Old Cascades in the Menagerie wilderness.
