The pinnacles were formed after and during the eruption of Mt Mazama 7,000 years ago. Much of the eruption was pyroclastic, great plumes of ash at extremely high temperatures exploded from the mountain, blanketing the earth for hundreds of miles. Those deposits of ash were quite heavy on the slopes of the mountain itself, as might be imagined. With the temperatures as they were, great plumes of gas escaped forming hollow channels. The ash on the sides of those channels melded into a harder and more durable substance than the surrounding fields. What we call the pinnacles were at one time great spouting vents for extra- ordinarily hot gases in a field of volcanic ash. The ash cooled and eventually eroded away. Leaving behind stone pinnacles to provoke wonder at the majesty of life.
