Water Spun Lace The Smith River in the coast range 30 miles The trail at Kentucky Waterfalls is 2 miles from the trailhead to the twin waterfalls, Kentucky Waterfalls, at the end of the trail. The trail is moderate, mostly downhill to the falls with an uphill trek back. A short distance, I can't say for certain, but perhaps a mile, the trail passes the Upper Waterfall, a graceful descent that is seasonal. Brad and I did the hike in May, and it was flowing then. None of the information I'd ever read about Kentucky Waterfalls mentioned a third fall, and Brad deduced the upper fall must be seasonal. If you want to see it, make the hike earlier in the season. :-) Presently I don't have directions to the fall. I recommend looking it up in the recreational pages of the Siuslaw National Forest although I do so with a caveat. I used those directions when we did the hike and they weren't accurate. However, they were close enough that we were able to follow them until we came upon the road signs. We had no trouble finding the trailhead. The road was closed during the summer of 2006; I will go back in the summer of 2007 and include better directions. :-) Forward ~ The Smith River falls at Kentucky Waterfalls.
