Rock Climbing on Smith RockSmith Rock is composed of welded rhyolite tuff, although vulture ridge (not pictured here) is a dike, remnant of an old volcanic eruption. 1.2 million years ago, lava flows from Newberry Volcano flowed down the Crooked River canyon forming the ridge across the river from Smith Rock. The picnicking area sits on columnar basalt. The welded tuff, seen here in this photograph, rises as high as 550'. That's certainly not difficult to imagine, considering how tiny the rock climber appears in this photo. :-) Please, make ever effort to leave the rock as you found it. :-) Rock Climbing Ethics from the National Outdoor Leadership School.
