East Lake under the auspices of the Deschutes National Forest of Oregon

East Lake is the smaller of the two lakes situated within Newberry Caldera at Newberry National Volcanic Monument in central Oregon. It has two campgrounds: East Lake campground and Cinder Hill Campground. It also boasts a resort. East Lake has 4 boat launches. One at East Lake campground, two at Cinder Hill Campground and another at Hot Springs boat launch. The fee for launching a boat at any of these sites is $5.00 a day.

East Lake Campground in Newberry National Volcanic Monument in Oregon

Most sites in this campground are on the lake or just a couple of minutes walk. There are opportunities for bird watching, bicycling, sightseeing, and canoeing. East Lake has a little more shade than the other lakes in the Deschutes National Forest of Oregon. This makes it a perfect getaway in the heat of summer. There nearby hikes into the Big Obsidian Flow and Paulina Creek Waterfalls are nearby, relatively speaking. As always, fishing is an option, and East Lake Campground has a boat launch. East Lake Campground stays popular throughout the summer, and since no reservations are accepted, be sure to plan ahead.

East Lake Campground is open from May to October. I've been there on opening fishing weekend in the high lakes with my dad, and there was a lot of snow on the ground and it was cold. So plan for that. In September the winds can pick up. I remember Paulina Lake sounding like the ocean early on in September. The cost for one night is $16 for the first vehicle and $8 for each additional vehicle. A $5 Day Pass or $30 Annual Pass or other valid Recreation Pass is required for day use. Newberry National Volcanic Monument has a dump station and that fee is $10. Under normal circumstances there is potable water. You might want to check with the forest service to make certain it is available before making plans. This campground, unlike so many others, actually has a flush toilet! :-)

RV Camping at East Lake in Newberry National Volcanic Monument

East Lake Campground has 29 single sites. As I stated previously, reservations are not possible. The maximum length of Rv a campsite can sustain is 26'. There are no hookups for water, electricity or sewer. East Lake has no dump station, but Paulina Lake Campground does. As already stated, the fee for the dump station is $10.00.
