High Rock Canyon in the South Warner Wilderness is something I've yet to hike and see. However, I've read about it, and wish to share the opportunity with you here. The trail was originally carved by different tribes utilizing the area. It's rugged indeed. Captain John Fremont recorded the first white man's use in 1844, and the Applegate brothers used it to guide settlers from the Willamette Valley in Oregon to the gold fields and towns of California. It's wilderness today, and far from any human activities but those that seek the beauty of this hike. When dry the road is accessible all the way to Steven's Camp in the upper canyon. The hike from Steven's Camp is exceptional, water accumulates there and creates a desert oasis. High Rock Canyon east to High Rock Lake is very rugged and remote. It can be accessed by experienced and drivers well provisioned explorers with four wheel drive vehicles. The canyon is sixteen miles long, and a fine place for hiking, mountain biking and horseback riding. Noted vistas besides the beauty of the area: the emigrant signature sites and "Post Office" cave are about 2 miles from the east entrance of the canyon. A precautionary note: This is a wilderness, the only facilities of any kind you'll find are Steven's Camp. Be respectful, pack it all out.
I found this information on the BLM site for Surprise Valley. If you care to do more research:
