Terrible Tillie off the Coast of Oregon.

Tillamook Rock Lighthouse,
called Terrible Tillie because of her exposure to wind and wave,
sits atop a sea stack in the Pacific Ocean.

The lighthouse was constructed over a span of 525 days (1879 to 1881),
the rock fought every step. The construction crew blasted the stubborn basalt, struggling through
three winters, huddling behind canvas at the beginning and later behind stone walls.

After constructed, Tillie did not relinquish her reign of terror. The rock besieged by wind
and wave kept the lighthouse crew of four on edge, trying to sustain the responsibility of a light in the middle
of the ocean. Even so, Tillie saved countless lives, guiding ships to the relative safety of the Columbia River. In 1957 her light
was extinguished. She's privately owned and used a moratorium now.
