Sightseeing on the Santiam Pass,

Travel Oregon and ...See Mt Washington, mountain pinnacle, glacier scoured in the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. At the advent of the glacier age, Mt Washington was no longer an active volcano. What we see here is the sculpted remains of the volcanic plug. Mt Jefferson and Mt Hood, both to the north, continued erupting throughout the ice age and that accounts for much of the difference between the two stratovolcanoes to the north and Mt Washington as we see them today. Mt Washington and Mt Jefferson can be viewed together on Hwy 242, the McKenzie Pass - Santiam Pass Oregon Scenic Byway, a perspective that should not be missed. Depending on visibility, Mt Hood, 70 miles to the north, can sometimes be viewed as well. By no means are these the only mountains to be seen from the McKenzie Pass - Santiam Pass Oregon Scenic Byway. You might want to give this route some serious thought and include it in your list of "places to see". The photo above was taken on Hwy 22 - 20, for at this point, Hwy 20, otherwise known as the Over the River and through the Woods Scenic Byway, has intersected with Hwy 22, the Santiam Pass through the Cascade Mountains of Oregon. A few years ago the area just east of here was impacted by the B and B complex fire. Lightning caused, the fire was originally several that, continuing to burn, combined to make one quite comprehensive conflagration. The area is dotted with interpretive kiosks that explain how the fire started, how it grew and the recovery. Fire shorn, this aspect of nature is impressive not simply in its destructive power, but in the promise of renewal as well. Enjoy every aspect as you travel Oregon: sightseeing, camping, expansive vistas, great hiking trails in our national forests and/or our wilderness areas; forests fire burned. Swim in the crisp, vibrant waters of mountain lakes while camping alongside. Travel Oregon, but protect our National Forests and Wilderness Areas.
