Travel Oregon: Sightseeing on the Santiam | |||
Travel Oregon and ... enjoy the Mt Mt Washington impresses, no matter the viewpoint, but the best viewpoints to be had when traveling by car are the one from which I took this photo on the Santiam Pass and the magnificent views available on the Santiam Pass - McKenzie Pass Oregon Scenic Byway, hwy 242. The mountain rises above 75 square miles of lava strewn plains. It's been called a geologic wonderland. The peak we see today rose a shield volcano, and the angularity of the mountain is what's left after glaciation: the volcanic plug. Mt Washington wilderness area is rugged terrain, used primarily by hunters, mountain climbers and hikers. It is accessible only on foot. Compared to the nearby Mt Jefferson wilderness and 3 Sisters Wilderness, use is low. The primary trail is the Pacific Crest National Scenic Trail, extending 16.6 miles into the wilderness. It enters the wilderness in the north at Big Lake West Campground and leaves it near Dee Wright Observatory on the Santiam Pass - McKenzie Pass Oregon Scenic Byway.
