Northeastern California was once a seaway. That is, until an ancient spurt of volcanism, lasting millenia began. Ancient flows initiated the process of land building, shaping the undercarriage so to speak. Another, bout of eruptions, those that we have come to know as the volcanism of the high Cascades, as well as the fault uplifting that resulted in the basin and ranges, shaped Surprise Valley and the Warners as we see them today. Surprise Valley is the basin, the Warners are fault block mountains, as also is the escarpment (uplift) to the east that shapes that boundary.

A bit of important information: The Forest Service follows a proscription in the south Warner Wilderness that allows lightning struck fires to burn. It goes without saying, but if you happen to be in the wilderness and this happens, get out.
